Behavioral healthcare is one of medicine’s most challenging and most needed disciplines. Helping individuals and families affected by addictive disorders, co-occurring mental health conditions, and trauma is a calling that demands acknowledging the multifactorial nature of the human experience, the evolution of effective treatments, an ever-changing substance use landscape, and uncontrollable extra-therapeutic determinants of health. While NRT Behavioral Health leaders are acutely focused on the ground-level work of continuously improving its programs, they must also maintain a broad perspective on the issues affecting behavioral healthcare and the health of the populations it serves. From time to time, we will use this space to share ideas and perspectives relevant to the discussion of addiction, treatment, and the social dynamics affecting our population’s mental and behavioral health.
